Central Missouri Enjoys Mild Late-August Weather

Central Missouri is enjoying an unexpected reprieve from the usual August heat, with comfortable mid-70s temperatures and refreshing northerly breezes.

Today’s high is set to reach just 73°F, and while a few clouds may appear, the area is likely to stay dry as rain from the southwest won’t reach our region.

Tomorrow morning will feel especially cool, with lows in the low 50s before sunshine and mild weather return in the afternoon.

This mild trend continues throughout the week.

Expect highs in the mid to upper 70s, gradually increasing cloudiness, and only a slight chance of a passing shower.

With average August temperatures in Columbia typically much warmer, locals are encouraged to make the most of this unusual stretch of pleasant weather outdoors.

Immigration Fuels Missouri's Population Growth Amid Natural Decline

Missouri’s population has surged to over 6.25 million by 2024, reflecting a 1.5% growth since 2020.

This uptick is mainly fueled by migration, as more than 90,000 newcomers have settled in the state during this time. A natural population decline—over 11,000 more deaths than births—has been offset by this influx.

Luke Dietterle from MU Extension emphasized that migration, especially international, now drives Missouri’s growth, with about 60% of new residents coming from abroad.

The Springfield Metro Area leads with a 3.08% population boost, gaining nearly 15,000 residents, while Columbia welcomed around 5,600 new people since 2020.

In contrast, mid-Missouri counties like Randolph and Audrain saw declines, straining local workforces, especially in manufacturing.

Programs such as Mexico’s Workforce Resource Assistance Program are helping sustain employment and support nearly 1,000 workers, as communities adapt to shifting demographics.
